PhD comprehensive exam (Oral)

Hi,

I plan to apply for a PhD in materials engineering but my question is on PhD comprehensive (Oral) exams in general.

How hard was your PhD comp?
How did you prepare for it?

To be totally honest, mine was awful but only because one of the three professors was this new professor who had something to prove. I heard from other students that he also grilled them as he did me. This guy was out of line, i thought. But the other two professors didn't stop him or anything. I passed and everyone else passed but this guy made us all miserable.
