it completely depends on the program, sezme. Some departments encourage students to publish right away. Those departments tend to be departments where a lot of group or lab work is done. Other areas or fields might encourage you to publish only one thing during the time you are there. In the first case you might publish during your first year even. In the second case, you might not publish until you are writing your dissertation.

well, i thought i wasnt' expected to publish anything until I was working on my dissertation but some people in my department are already publishing and its kind of stressing me out!!

Everyone is on their own track with publishing. Just do what you can and try not to let other go-getter grad students get to you.

If your field is highly competitive, sometimes advisors want things published right away. My dissertation was a set of publications, bound with an intro (which was part of a review article), and a conclusions section. Thus, I wrote my dissertation as i went along. I think this is a hard, but good thing to learn. Try and get in the habit of putting things in publication format, even as you are producing the data. When you are trying to graduate, things get crazy.

BTW I am sure your advisor will let you know when they want you to publish
