i am going to complete B.Tech coming month with an aggregate of around 76%( class rank is 5 out of 63 students ) in cse from an average univ in india. 1. gpa is around 3.75(class topper has 81%). 2. my gre score is 800q,500v,5.0 awa. 3. i got 102 in toefl ibt last year in august( got 20 in speaking ) 4. i also gave my GATE in cse(graduate aptitude test in engg for ms/mtech in india) and secured a rank of 905 out of 17500 students( 95 percentile). 5. i also got 98 percentile and 97 percentile in all india aptitude tests that were conducted by NIIT in which 63000 and 37000 candidates appeared in 2004 and 2005. 6. my final year project has been awarded the best in my department( wonder if its of any use) since i implemented an ieee phd paper. 7. letter of recos are avg in that they say that i am in top 5% of class blah,blah.... but from unknown profs, no research exp,no pubs. 8. X class -> 79% CBSE XII class -> 86% CBSE now the problem is that i have been placed in a top fortune 200 IT services company, so i am thinking of working for abt 1,2 years & then applying... so what do u guyz think , will i get any good univ(between ranks20-40) this year or should i work and apply later. |

I think you should apply and see what happens. If you don't get in to the schools of your choice, then take a break and work - especially if you think that iwll help your application for the following year. Then apply the next year and hope you're chances improve!
