Default Writers Block - help!

I am currently working on my dissertation. I had heard that some people experience writers block during the process but i didn't think that it would happen to me. Well, it did. I sit and sit and stare at the screen. i just seem to have lost my will or motivation to write. I can't think of what to write. I want to keep moving on this chapter of the dissertation but I seem to make no progress as the days roll on...

any advice, thoughts or helpful cheers would be appreciated.

Try setting a real schedule for yourself so that your days don't run together. Just give yourself some small task to accomplish each day. it need not be writing as there are so many tasks involved in the dissertation process.

i agree w/ josh's advice. Also, try doing some creative writing. That might help you get your head in the game and set up a writing routine for yourself.

Default I completely understand

I have been working on my dissertation for months... and definitely have had some dark days (weeks/ months). You get to the point where you think no one understands. I am not sure that I have any advice, but continue to just put words down on paper. Some days will be better than others, and remember you think your dissertation is a much bigger deal than everyone else does. Just work to get through it.

Hope that helps, but know there are others every day sitting in front on their own computer feeling the same. Just keep working at it.

Good luck!! Stay in touch and let me know how you are doing.

Sloan

I think it is very wise to take breaks. However, they should always be planned breaks. No improvisational breaks. No waking up on a Tuesday, feeling lazy and throwing in the towel for the day. BUT plan to take weekends off (at least one day - consistently). And if you finish a chapter plan a little mini-vacation. But plan it. Don't just let it happen. You will begin to feel that you have so much more control over yourself.

Another great way that works for me, is to take time off. Read what you've written so far, and act as though you are a critic making comments. Schedule some sessions to think and write notes about what should come next. After about a week, come back and begin writing-- I promise this helps

Default Maybe it will help

An important indicator of a quality dissertation is its inner logics and unity. The paper should contain one or more theses which should be proved in the body of the research, logically reasoned, critically evaluated, and compared to the concepts of other scientists working in the same field. If a dissertation has any practical significance, it should also provide information about practical implementation of the data acquired in the process of working on it, and in case the significance of the paper is of theoretical character, it should give a clear idea how its conclusions may be used by other researchers.

My advice to you would be to try typing as much as you can. After, you have a good amount of content, step away from everything and start again the next day. If you find that you are sitting too long typing all information out at once, you will eventually experience a burn-out.
